Location
It is located in the center of the Saronic Gulf, surrounded by Agistri, Salamina, Methana, Trizina, Poros and Piraeus.
Its pivotal position between the Peloponnese and Attica, two historical centers of Greek and pan-European civilization,
made it a very important trading and transit center very early on, competing with the trading cities of Asia Minor,
while appearing to be present in every aspect of world history.
Today, this location has made it a growing suburb of Piraeus and Athens and a popular holiday resort.
The island covers an area of 87,410 acres and presents a large geomorphological variety with dry climate
and pine-covered mountains.
The city of Aegina
The headquarters of Aegina lies on the west end gradually extending to the east, covering the entire northern plain,
while massifs extend to the south.
The city center is centered around the port, at the southwest end of which is the bust of Kapodistrias,
as a minimum tribute to the governor who gave new life to this historic site.
The shopping area extends along the seafront, with a wealth of fine dining centers, tourist shops and lodgings,
and local produce outlets. The market extends into the shopping streets of the city where 19th-century mansion
architecture immediately attracts visitors.
Sights
The island has important sights such as the Temple of Aphaia, Paleochora (the "island" Mystras),
the remains of the Temple of Hellenic Zeus, the prehistoric / historical settlement of Cologne
and the Archaeological Museum.
Well known beaches of the island are Marathon and Agia Marina.
A popular tourist center is also the imposing Monastery of St. Nektarios, as well as numerous churches
that have survived the Turkish occupation.
The island is served by local coaches, and the visitor can choose to take the city on one of the traditional wagons.
At the south end of the island, 9 km from the port of Aegina, is the tourist resort of Perdika, where there is a frequent
daily connection (by boat) with the islet of the monastery.
